The memorable photographs of Rosemarie Zens show how China has increasingly oriented itself towards Western culture over the last decades and how homogenizing forces such as science, technology and the global market influence individual lives. On various levels, however, the images also testify to how the precarious developments of modern China reflect our own approach to the world, while traces of the spirituality of ancient Chinese culture can still be found in the style of the images.
