Moon Rabbit – The Chinese Journey
A diplomatically challenging event for me was the German-Chinese New Year’s reception, to which I was invited with the show of my photographs. The general response, the great interest and the many lively conversations meant a lot to me and were ultimately a very gratifying experience.
The exhibition is on display until March 15.

The memorable photographs of Rosemarie Zens show how China has increasingly oriented itself towards Western culture over the last decades and how homogenizing forces such as science, technology and the global market influence individual lives. On various levels, however, the images also testify to how the precarious developments of modern China reflect our own approach to the world, while traces of the spirituality of ancient Chinese culture can still be found in the style of the images.

Seeing memories with more than the mind’s eye. Mark Feeney, The Boston Globe

Seeing memories with more than the mind’s eye
Photography review in: The Boston Globe (Febr. 23, 2017):
The four shows currently at the Griffin Museum of Photography share a single title: “Legacy. Migration. Memory.” They run through March 5. That rubric is a tall order, and in varying degrees it accurately describes each show.
Rosemarie Zens was born in 1944 in a town in eastern Germany that soon thereafter became part of Poland. She returned with a camera 70 years later. Might that history account for the arresting way in which these pictures feel at once connected to the landscape and apart from it? → continue to read (external link)
Immigrants all! – Elin Spring on „Legacy. Migration. Memory“ at Griffin Museum of Photography

Elin Spring auf on her Blog What will you remember? (Febr. 1, 2017):
In her series The Sea Remembers, Berlin artist Rosemarie Zens mines the story of her mother’s escape from war in March 1945 while carrying her nursing infant (the artist) in a saga her mother only unburdened many decades later as the Berlin Wall fell. Using antique family photographs as a touchstone, Zens returns to a birthplace she never knew, drawing upon “the existential properties of landscapes” to weave reality and fantasy into oblique and poetic images that transmit the sensation of waking from a dream. Zens’ large color landscapes of her Polish birthplace are highly metaphoric, often capturing a frosty and inhospitable winter that weeps “exile”… → continue to read (external link)

The number of German displaced persons and refugees around 1945 was more than ten million. There were several million displaced persons in other countries too, Poland first and foremost. The number of children born to such refugee and expellee families between 1945 and about 1970 is correspondingly large.
This anthology is based on numerous conversations with German and Polish representatives of the “second generation”. It deals with the significance of their parents’ loss of their home country for their own life and identity, with experiences of alienation and ostracization not really understood for a long time.
Often the parents’ graphic reports, conversely, suppressed memories were strong enough to prevent their children from taking root in their new places of residence, and traumatic experiences were transferred unconsciously to their descendants. The highly varied texts, however, in the form of essays, interviews, poems, reportage and short prose pieces, also testify to the burden of parental memories being offloaded to the advantage of a successful self-definition. Berlin based photographer, teacher and poet Rosemarie Zens shares images from her journeys on iconic Route 66, the subject of her recent book, Journeying 66. Vom Mythos des Unterwegsseins. The Myth of the Road (Kehrer Verlag), written by Rosemarie Zens. Additional Text by Wolfgang Zurborn. The photographs are testimonies to the legendary Route 66 and the author and the photographer’s collective memories of the 1960s way of life commonly associated with it. Over forty years ago, Rosemarie Zens followed the siren call of freedom on the road, and in 2010 she retraced her journey, witnessing how the highway had been transformed.

Igor Mukhin – Mein Moskau

Russian Photography 1985-1990. Between awakening and inner immigration.
About Igor Muskhin, Mein Moskau (2013)
Sometimes it takes a second glance. When I looked at the photo book „My Moscow“ by Igor Mukhin, published last year by the Swiss Benteli Verlag, I recognized some of his images. I had already seen them in the exhibition of contemporary Russian photography at the Houston Fotofest Biennial in 2012. There the artist was presented alongside Boris Mikhailov, Valera and Natasha Cherakshin and others as an important representative of a group of photographers of the “ Transition Period“. We are talking about the period when Soviet Russian society was beginning to open up after the liberalization of state censorship. It was also the same time when unregulated capitalist growth was shaping up, and a mass culture was emerging.
Photoplatz Gallery
It is of great honour and pleasure for me to display a selection of twenty pictures „Journeying 66“ at the legendary Photoplatz Gallery in the Berlin Hotel Bogota. I would like to thank Jochen Rissmann for bringing together the two great myths of traveling: the Trans-Siberian Railway (Christian Schneider) and my pictures of Route 66.
